stick of butter

noun An approach to getting dressed that involves nothing more and nothing less than dressing in the palette of ivories, whites, and yellows signature to a stick of butter.

Since I (very much accidentally) coined said approach in November 2018 on Instagram, the hashtag #stickofbutter has been used more than 4,000 times on the app, sparking media mentions in outlets such as Who What Wear, Domino, The Zoe Report, and Fashionista. I’m just as surprised as you are—but such is the power of churned cream.

menocore

adjective A coined-by-yours-truly descriptor of the particular style of dress that became popular circa 2017 wherein everyone seemed to be emulating the aesthetic of middle-aged women on a beach vacation (think Diane Keaton in Something’s Gotta Give).

I first wrote about menocore in this essay and it has since been cited in The New York Times, The Guardian, Vogue, Glamour, and The Hollywood Reporter.

the 3 p.m. theory

noun My theory that no matter how good an outfit is, no matter how great it feels to put on in the morning,  or how diligently I steam it, or how careful I am not to spill any salad dressing on it… it always expires by 3 pm due to variables outside my control (namely, wrinkles and sweat).
